Our Experience
In early September of 2023, one evening after work we took to the Ingraham Trail (one of the most popular roads in the area) to enjoy the scenery of the rural areas, lakes, and forests. After just about 40 minutes of driving from Yellowknife, we ended up in the parking lot of Cameron Falls. Even though it was already early September, the fall colours were starting to peak through.
We headed off on the trail which is a mix of forest walks, rugged terrain, and a great view at the end. This hike took us maybe an hour with all our stops! The trail is somewhat easy to follow (you just have to pay attention – there is markers and you can also just use the all trails app or listen / look for the water) and will give you some pretty amazing views over the area.
Eventually we reached the waterfall. The water level was low but the waterfall was still rushing and you can hear it from pretty far away – what an amazing sound to hear. We headed up past the waterfall to cross a bridge behind it and head down the other side. This gave us some unique views of the waterfall from a different angle and also allowed us to get down by the water. You can definitely swim here and maybe even fish around the area! If its a warm day bring your swimsuits and take a dip.
After a peaceful hike, we headed back to the car. As it was a weekday evening, we didn’t run into anybody else which was pretty cool – thats the beauty of Yellowknife!
What You Should Know
This is a busy hike – well, as busy as Yellowknife can get that is. However, you’re usually sharing the trail with a few others if you go during the weekends. There may also be a few dogs here – one of my favourite parts about Yellowknife is how many people own dogs!
We did this hike early-mid September and the fall colours were already starting to show! Although you can do this trail anytime, I highly recommend the month of September when the fall colours are in full swing. Although the trees don’t get as impressively colourful as other places in Canada (i.e. Quebec!), the golden yellow leaves create such a vibrant contrast that is so beautiful. Make sure to pay attention to the weather – Yellowknife is known for getting real cold, real quick.
Yellowknife also has a tremendous amount of wildlife, so always be on the look out and be prepared (i.e. bear spray) just incase! However, we didn’t have any run ins and it’s not super likely here as it is a popular trail.
If you want to do the hike but aren’t comfortable going on your own, need a ride, or just want and expert to experience the fun with, consider booking a tour: Cameron Falls Hike – Guided Tour
