The Two Ultimate Must-Do Hikes in Slovenia
Slovenia is one of those countries that will blow you away. We didn’t know what to expect as there wasn’t too much out there on this beautiful country. During our one week trip around (where we packed SO much in!), we did these two must-do hikes in Slovenia – the Kamnik Saddle Hike and the Valley of the Seven Lakes Hike!
The Kamnik Saddle Hike
This was our favourite of the two hikes! It’s located in the Julian Alps and we accessed the trailhead through Logar Valley which is a super stunning drive itself and worth the trip. This could be done as a day trip, but we loved staying overnight in the hut (see below for information) as it really has the best views.
This hike is easy for most of the way up until the last little push where it gets a little sketchy (for our standards anyways) and requires some careful very-beginner rock climbing / scrambling. It’s easily doable, you just have to be cautious! It’s full our alp views, forested areas, and even a waterfall at the beginning. Plus, once you get to the hut it’s 100% worth it. At the top you’ll have stunning views of the alps all around you, and we were welcomed into a very quiet hut (during high season!) with amazing food and snacks. It was one of our favourite experiences to date as Canadian camping doesn’t quite have this!

The Valley of the Seven Lakes Hike
The Valley of the Seven Lakes hike is a long hike in Triglav National Park that’s usually done as a two day hike. This route is quite popular, and many people traverse this park too, but because it’s quite a large route you won’t run in to too many people (you may run into more cows!). There are also a bunch of huts along the route to stop at for snacks and meals. On this hike you’ll find alpine lakes, cottages, meadows, animals, and some seriously amazing views.
This hike we did immediately after the Kamnik Saddle so it made for a super long day! However, this scenery was completely different. This hike was longer, had more scrambling / loose rock (mostly near the end of the hike for the route we were taking), but had some really epic views. The mountain hut was in the middle of the mountains and had some alpine lake views with mountain animals surrounding the area – such a cool thing to witness!

See You in Slovenia!
We seriously loved Slovenia – a place that really surprised us and we will 100% go back to explore the mountains even more. Another hike we would have loved to do is the Debela Pec hike, but we just didn’t have the time in our short itinerary – and honestly there are SO many other hikes out there to try in this beautiful country. If you are looking to visit Slovenia, consider checking out our one week itinerary over on our thatch page for the exact itinerary we used to jam-pack ALL the adventure possible (including the two hikes above) into our trip. We loved Slovenia, and know you will too.
