Ultimate Kayaking Adventure On The Soca River
The Soca River is a stunning place to explore – and this kayaking adventure on the Soca River was honestly our favourite way to experience it. Take the morning or the afternoon to see the Soca River from your kayak. Kayak past waterfalls, paddle in the clearest water, and see the Alps surrounding you – it’s truly breathtaking.
The Soca River
Soca River runs through many places but the most common place to explore the the river is from Bovec. Bovec is an adventure town in Slovenia located in the northwestern part of the country. It’s about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Lake Bohinj or Ljubljana.
The Soca River is seriously stunning. This alpine river runs through the northwestern part of the country and has so many spots to check out. You can see the river from so many different vantage points: walk and hike beside it, swim in it, raft in group tours, kayak in it, and so much more.
The Tour
We couldn’t recommend this tour more! The tour company is Soca Splash and they were pretty easy to find with the address given (plus there was parking available). They bring you to/from the tour, provide you with all the equipment (wetsuit, helmets, kayaks, paddles, etc).
The tour is for beginners, but if you wanted to organize a tour for more advanced levels we are pretty sure they’d be willing to. They had a bunch of availability during the summer, but as Slovenia tourism gets busier, we would recommend booking in advance.
The Experience
Our experience started when we arrived in the Trenta Valley the night before the tour (after exploring the Vrsic Pass). We left the next day open to explore the Soca River but we didn’t know in what capacity. The night before over dinner we checked out some tour options and came across the one we found above! The Soca River Kayak Tour, where they take you through beginner rapids. They had a time slot open for first thing the next morning so we hopped on that one.
The tour starts from the town of Bovec which means we were able to grab a pastry and a coffee in town before the tour. We then headed to the tour and checked in to get all of our gear. Because our tour was the first one in the morning, it turns out we were the only two people on the tour – a private tour for the cost of a group one! They transported us to the starting point with our gear and we hopped into the water to learn some beginner moves.
The tour is about 3 hours long, which honestly flies by. Throughout the tour you’ll learn different moves, what to know about kayaking on the rapids, and you’ll get more comfortable. We learned how to turn on the river, had some fun trying to stand up on our kayaks (and falling into the river ofcourse), how to brace for the trees when the rapids don’t take you where you planned, and so much more. It was such a fun morning with so much learning.
We lucked out with AMAZING weather. The sunny weather with the fresh cold water was a perfect mix. The river is definitely cold, however it’s so refreshing. The whole time you will be absolutely amazed by the views, plus the tour guide will definitely be able to point out some local spots and hiking areas in the Alps. We definitely recommend coming back to the end point of the tour once you have your car (it’s a short drive from the tour centre) to have a relax by the shore – it’s one of the best spots for swimming.
However maybe kayaking isnt for you or you want more intense rapids on a rafting tour. Here are a few other tour options on the Soca River that will equally showcase everything the Soca River has to offer – and is FILLED with adventure!
We cannot recommend this tour enough! The Soca River Kayak Tour was just one of the experiences we loved in Slovenia – it’s SUCH a beautiful country with so much to offer. Check out all our other posts to learn more about this country – you really need to see so many different parts of this area.
